ST. JAMES'S HOTEL AND CLUB
Accommodation wise, London has a reputation for hotels that tend to be overpriced and in particular, also under deliver in room quality. This is also true of the selection of five star properties on offer. In the St James Hotel and Club, we have uncovered a gem that exceeds expectations on both fronts. The secret of this intimate, 60 room hotel, lies partly in its unrivalled location in a quiet cul-de-sac just off St. James’s Street, near prestigious Mayfair and the shops and restaurants of Bond, Regent and Oxford Street… not forgetting the theatres and nightlife of the West End.

Unlike a good number of its five star competitors where a refurbishment would be in order, the interiors of St. James’ Hotel and Club have undergone a complete renovation led by award-winning interior designer AMJ Design. Each of the luxurious 60 guest rooms and suites reflects Althoff Hotels attention to detail, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and exquisite furnishings. So everything feels new and fresh.

Our stay was in the top floor Terrace Suite consisting of a large separate bedroom and elegant living area. Exquisitely finished with handmade silk wallpaper in soft neutrals, black lacquered furniture, handcrafted Murano glass chandeliers, polished natural stones and chrome glass fittings in the bathroom. The lounge area includes a fireplace, antique furnishing and carefully appointed art that completes what is a very special suite. Special mention must be made of the super comfy king-sized bed. Mattresses are handmade from Hypnos and have a reputation of being the most comfortable mattresses in the world. I also loved having the novelty of a large private rooftop terrace with panoramic views over greater London.

Dining wise, the arrival of Michelin star Executive Chef William Drabble adds an extra dimension to guests’ dining experience at the St. James’s fine dining restaurant, Seven Park Place. Alternatively, William’s Bar & Bistro is a cosy, yet sophisticated spot offering breakfast, a bistro menu of classic dishes, afternoon tea or just a quiet drink. As you would expect from a boutique property of this nature, the overall service levels are impressive, with special mention to the outstanding concierge team. In conclusion, St. James Hotel and Club is a class above many other five star London properties and for what’s on offer, it’s also excellent value.
